Weekly planning
The weekly reset checklist
A weekly reset is one fixed moment a week where you get your home and your head back to a calm starting point. In about an hour you reset the main rooms, deal with laundry and food, empty your head and plan the coming week. On a busy week, a twenty-minute short version keeps the habit going.
What a weekly reset is (and is not)
The weekly reset, often called a Sunday reset, became popular on social media as a cosy hour of cleaning and planning before the new week. The idea behind it is older and simpler: a fixed moment where loose ends come together, so they do not follow you around all week. It is not a deep clean and it is not a productivity marathon. The aim is a calm Monday, not a perfect house.
It does not have to be Sunday. Friday afternoon, Saturday morning or Monday evening work just as well. What matters is that it is the same moment every week.
The 60-minute checklist
- Reset the kitchen (15 min)Empty the dishwasher, clear the worktops, wipe the hob, check the fridge and throw out what is past it.
- Laundry on its way (5 min)Start a load, fold what is dry, put clean bedding out if it is that week.
- Ten-minute tidy (10 min)Walk through the house with a basket and return things to where they belong. Living room and hallway first.
- Bins and recycling (5 min)Empty the small bins, check which collection is next.
- Food for the week (10 min)Look at the week, choose four or five meals, write the shopping list.
- Empty your head (10 min)A short brain dump: what is open, what is new, what are you waiting for?
- Plan the week (5 min)Appointments in, routines on their day, no more than three priorities. See how to plan your week.
The 20-minute short version
Some weeks there is no hour. Keep the habit anyway with the parts that matter most:
- Clear the kitchen worktops (5 min)
- One load of laundry on (2 min)
- Shopping list for the first three days (5 min)
- Write down what is on your mind (5 min)
- Choose the one thing that must happen this week (3 min)
What to leave out
- Deep cleaning. Windows, oven and the fridge interior belong on a monthly or seasonal rhythm, not in the weekly reset. See daily, weekly and monthly.
- Catching up on everything. If the week went badly, the reset is not the moment to make up for it. Move what did not happen to a new day and start fresh.
- Aesthetics. Matching baskets and a perfect fridge are nice, not necessary. The point is a clear head.
Doing it together
In a shared home, split the reset by area rather than by task: one person takes the kitchen and food, the other laundry and the tidy, and you plan the week together for the last ten minutes. That last part is where the mental load gets shared: who takes which appointment, who orders the present, who calls the plumber.
| Time | Person A | Person B |
|---|---|---|
| 0 to 15 min | Kitchen reset | Laundry and bedding |
| 15 to 30 min | Bins and recycling, fridge check | Ten-minute tidy, hallway |
| 30 to 40 min | Meals and shopping list | Each writes down what is on their mind |
| 40 to 50 min | Together: the week, who does what | Together: the week, who does what |
Making it stick
- Tie it to something that happens anyway, like after Sunday breakfast or after the Friday food shop.
- Put it in your calendar as a recurring appointment with yourself.
- Use the same checklist every week, so you do not have to think.
- Skip it once without guilt. The next week is a new reset.
How SortYourMind does it
A weekly MindSweep, built in
SortYourMind has the planning half of the weekly reset built in: once a week a calm MindSweep (#SortYourSunday) walks you through your themes, so you add what is new, clear what is done and decide what counts next week. The house half becomes routines on their rhythm, which the app plans in your free time around your calendar.
- MindSweep once a week, on the day you choose
- Routines on their rhythm: every week, every few days or on fixed weekdays
- Skip a routine once without losing the rhythm
- A day and week report that shows what got done
Everything included, no card needed. Then you decide. Works in the browser on any device.
Questions
What is a Sunday reset?
A Sunday reset is a weekly routine, usually on Sunday, where you tidy the house, prepare food and plan the coming week, so you start Monday calm. Any fixed day works.
How long should a weekly reset take?
About an hour for the full version, twenty minutes for the short one. Longer than ninety minutes usually means deep cleaning has crept in; move that to a monthly rhythm.
Should a weekly reset include planning?
Yes. Cleaning resets the house, planning resets your head. Ten minutes to write down what is open and give the important things a day is the part that makes the biggest difference to the week.
