Weekly planning

Recurring tasks at home

You plan recurring tasks by giving every chore its own rhythm: daily, on fixed weekdays, every so many days, monthly or by season. Choose the rhythm that suits the job, not your calendar. Then put them at regular moments, so they happen by themselves and you no longer have to think about them.

Which rhythm for which job?

Examples of rhythms

Every dayWhat piles up otherwiseWashing up, tidying, feeding pets
Fixed weekdaysWhat is tied to your weekIroning on Monday and Thursday, bins on Wednesday

Every monthWhat you forget otherwiseOven, smoke alarms, drains, check the budget

A fixed rhythm or counted from last time?

A fixed rhythm always falls on the same days, even if you were late once: the bins go out on Wednesday, whatever happens. For other jobs, the last time is what counts: if you watered the plants on Sunday instead of Friday, the next turn is four days after Sunday. Choose per job what makes sense.

How to spread them over your week

  1. List all your recurring tasksBy room or by area: home, paperwork, people.
  2. Give each a rhythmIf in doubt, choose the less frequent one. You can always do it more often.
  3. Spread the heavy onesNot the bathroom, the washing and the food shop on the same evening.
  4. Pair them with something you do anywayWipe the sink after brushing your teeth, take the bin out when you leave the house.

Recurring tasks in an app

Most to-do apps can repeat a task on a date. What makes the difference at home is whether the app also finds the time: a task due on Thursday is only useful if Thursday has room for it. Compare in Todoist for household chores and the alternatives.

How SortYourMind does it

Routines that come back by themselves

In SortYourMind you give a routine a rhythm: every week, every 4 days or on fixed weekdays. It comes back by itself, ahead in your week too, and the app finds time for it around your appointments.

  • A rhythm per task, per room of your home
  • Visible in your weekly plan
  • Tell SyMon: "ironing every Monday and Thursday"
